Why This Course?

In addition to educating clients/members on how to accumulate savings for retirement and about their pension plan's provisions, retirement counselors now need to help answer the question, "How can I make my retirement savings last as long as I live?"

Longer life expectancy, rising health care costs, market fluctuation and inflation make this an increasingly difficult challenge for all but the wealthiest individuals. To answer it well, retirement counselors need to:
  • Understand the challenges of managing income so it lasts over a period of uncertain length and expense
  • Understand what needs to be considered and how to make informed decisions about drawing income from defined contribution accounts, when to begin Social Security, and how to take their pension distributions
  • Be able to tailor education and guidance to the unique circumstances of each individual
Who Should Participate?

Retirement counselors, call center staff and trustees who need to understand how distribution planning differs from accumulation planning because of the challenges and risks of managing income over a period of uncertain length and expense.
