Key IRA Changes Made by the SECURE Act
Key IRA Changes Made by the SECURE Act

Overall Rating: 8.8 / 10

The Setting Every Community Up for Retirement Enhancement (SECURE) Act has given us new rules relating to IRA distributions and contributions.
Practitioners must understand how these changes affect their clients, so that they can help them plan accordingly.
Some of these plans will necessitate revisiting and changing beneficiary planning strategies that were implemented for IRAs.
Note: The IRS Published Proposed regulations on February 24,2022. These regulations propose to modify some of the IRS’s interpretation of the SECURE Act, provided in IRS Publication 590-B; particularly the interpretation of the distribution options that are available to beneficiaries that inherit retirement accounts from owners who die on/after their required beginning date (RBD). We anticipate that the IRS will issue financial regulations and/or other guidance soon.
In "Key IRA Changes Made by the SECURE Act" by Denise Appleby, you will learn:
- The elimination of age limits on the ability to make contributions to traditional IRAs;
- New distribution rules for IRA beneficiaries, including the 10-year distribution rule for some;
- Who qualifies for the exception to the 10-year rule;
- How the beneficiary options changes affect spouse beneficiaries;
- Increase in the required beginning date (RBD).
