A growing share of our clients are military service members, veterans, and their families who retire with a benefits package unlike anything in the civilian world.
These benefits don’t behave like their civilian counterparts. A military pension isn’t a 401(k), VA disability isn’t taxable, TRICARE For Life isn’t Medigap, and the Survivor Benefit Plan isn’t life insurance, and most advisors have never been trained to navigate them. Applying civilian intuition can lead to costly, often irreversible mistakes: a mistimed Medicare Part B enrollment, a Survivor Benefit Plan election made without understanding it, or tax projections that ignore tax-free VA income thus putting clients’ retirement security at risk and exposing advisors professionally. This webinar gives advisors the working literacy to recognize the issues, ask the right questions, and avoid the one-way-door errors across military pensions and the TSP, VA disability and concurrent receipt, the Survivor Benefit Plan, and the TRICARE–Medicare interaction, and to know when to refer to an accredited Veterans Service Organization.
In "Serving Those Who Served: Military & Veteran Retirement Planning for Advisors" by Chet Bennetts, you will:
- Distinguish the three military retirement systems and identify which applies to a given client;
- Explain how VA disability, CRDP, and CRSC interact with taxable retired pay, and why the tax-free piece drives planning;
- Evaluate a Survivor Benefit Plan election against term-and-invest alternatives, including the 2023 repeal of the SBP-DIC “Widow’s Tax”;
- Integrate TRICARE For Life with the Medicare enrollment decision and recognize why it reshapes the Medigap analysis;
- Apply a structured intake protocol to spot benefit issues and know when to refer to an accredited VSO.
